Why we Love Little Vumbura

Little Vumbura is situated on a beautiful island in a private concession in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded as it is by water and lying close to large rivers, both water- and land-based activities are as central to the overall experience, with both offering spectacular and diverse wildlife sightings.

Destination:

Little Vumbura is nestled on a picturesque island in a private concession in Botswana’s northern Okavango Delta. Part of its charm is that it can only be accessed by boat, so epitomises a true island experience. Water-based activities are a key attraction. Mokoro and boat rides are popular activities and allow for spectacular wildlife spotting.

Experience:

Unforgettable adventures await all who come to visit this remote corner of the Delta. Activities include day and night game drives tracking the iconic wildlife, and water safaris by traditional mokoro, silently gliding through the channels. Boating adventures are also a family favourite, spotting elephants wading through the water, or wallowing pods of hippos. Guests may also want to try their hand at catch-and-release fishing. In camp, guests can refresh in the sparkling pool with magnificent views all around. When the sun sets, the Star Deck offers superb stargazing.

Purpose:

The Vumbura Private Wilderness Area is leased from remote rural communities in the Okavango Community Trust (OCT). The result of this meaningful and long-standing partnership includes socio-economic benefits, livelihood diversification, and benefits from training and skills development for the people of the villages – as well as building on more positive attitudes to tourism and conservation. The largest number of employees within our Botswana operations are employed from these five villages.

Wildlife:

The annually inundated grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding the camp are locally referred to as melapo, and offer good seasonal viewing of elephants, giraffes, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebras, common waterbuck, reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe, and Cape buffalos. Hippos, and crocodiles abound in the waterways. Predators include the African wild dog, resident prides of lions, as well as leopard, cheetah, and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round on game drives through the savannah areas, and guided nature walks around the islands.

Little Vumbura:

An enchanting camp set on a compact island in the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta. Its six airy tented suites, shaded by the canopy of an ancient forest, sit on raised decks overlooking annually inundated grasslands.

Each well-appointed tent, decorated in soft neutral hues with touches of indigo, has en-suite facilities, and a deck with sweeping vistas over the shimmering grasses of the surrounding floodplains. In the main area, a plunge pool and reading area overlook the floodplains, while a Star Deck is reached by a bridge leading off the dining area.

This traditional and intimate safari camp is only accessible by boat and is perfect for a family or small group of friends.

Little Vumbura – Game Drives

Little Vumbura is situated in the Vumbura Private Wilderness Area, known for its scenic beauty and diverse wildlife, and a concession which is leased from nearby rural communities. Ecotourism activities here thus help communities benefit from conservation. Morning and afternoon game drives allow you to take in the plains game and predators that inhabit the area in good numbers. Key mammal species may include seasonal herds of elephant and buffalo, sable antelope, zebra, wildebeest, tsessebe, lechwe, giraffe, lion, leopard, African wild dog, spotted hyaena, and occasionally cheetah.

Little Vumbura – Guided Nature Walks

Walking in the wilderness is a wonderful way of being even closer to nature, observing the smaller creatures and flora you miss when travelling by vehicle. Our expert guides welcome the opportunity to share their bushlore adventures ...

* Seasonal and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide.

Little Vumbura – Mokoro Excursions

There is no better way of viewing wildlife, and exploring the crystal clear channels of the Okavango Delta than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). Often providing up close and personal sightings of tiny painted reed frogs and glorious waterlilies.

* Water levels permitting, however, usually possible all year round.

Little Vumbura – Boating

A boat ride along the calm waters of the delta is another idyllic form of water wildlife viewing. Sighting pods of hippo and crocodile is common in the waterways.

* Water levels permitting, however, usually possible all year round.

Little Vumbura – Fishing

Cast your line, and try your hand at fishing on a catch and release basis. The camp has a limited supply of basic equipment for your use.

* Note that fishing is seasonal as it is prohibited by Botswana law in January and February due to breeding purposes.

Little Vumbura – Birding

The birding at Little Vumbura is as varied as it is exceptional all year round. In the summer many migrant species are present, while other specials which are regularly seen include wattled crane, slaty egret, chirping cisticola, fan-tailed widowbird, pink-backed pelican and possibly rosy-throated longclaw for the dedicated birders.

Probably the best City hotel weve stayed at. Alal Gogo was particularly outstanding. He managed to arrange for us to attend the Woody Allan Band show with our guest (who is a musician) even when it had been booked out and was very courteous throughout. Thank you so muclh. A wonderful stay.
