The lodge & sanctuary date back to 1959 when Dr. Von Nagy bought the property as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930's and was originally the farm manager's house. In the first half of the 1900's most of the area on the southern slopes of Mount Meru were coffee plantations.
Dr. Von Nagy's was passionate about animals and he quickly turned his family home into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He setup the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. He also helped the government to establish the Wildlife Collage and used his animal sanctuary and orphanage as a training facility for the students. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the lodge was born.

The rooms have been built over the last 50 years. The oldest room was built in 1961, its one of the oldest hotel rooms in Tanzania. We try to keen the rooms as original as possible while at the same time trying to keep up with the times.
Facilities
The Lodge features a total of 17 guestrooms comprising of 13 double rooms, 2 single rooms, 1 inter-connected family room and 1 large single unit family room or triple room. Our double beds are 7 foot long by 6 foot wide (what some call super king). Our single beds are 7 foot long by 4 foot wide giving one plenty of space to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

You pay the confirmed price directly to the hotel. Any claims and obligations out of the accommodation contract only exist between you and the hotel chosen by you. emporium-collection™ does not enter into the contract with you about the accommodation. Rates available and any booking made via the emporium-collection™ reservation system can’t be combined with other offers or promotions. Bookings take place according to the best and currently lowest emporium-collection™ day price in each case. This price is submitted directly by the hotel for the arrival date chosen and is shown in the name of the hotel. Available emporium-collection™ last-minute, seasonal, weekend or special prices will be considered automatically during the booking.
If you want to make a booking after your availability search, you will have to fill in personal details about you and your credit card details. The credit card details are required to guarantee your booking, the charges will be made by the hotel. If you are logged in to your account the personal details will be pre-filled. By clicking the button “CONFIRM REGISTRATION". Charged upon arrival” you make a binding offer to book the selected room.
