Magashi Camp

Why we Love Magashi Camp

Magashi Camp is situated in the productive and phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Place: Emporium-Safari Magashi is picture perfect. Perched on the Magashi Peninsula, it overlooks the shimmering waters of Lake Rwanyakazinga and the Mutumba Mountains in the west. Located in Akagera National Park – central Africa’s largest protected wetland – it is Rwanda’s last remaining refuge for savannah species, and tells a story of survival and regeneration, much like Rwanda itself.

Experience: With 11 different habitat types, not only is game viewing exceptional in Akagera National Park, but its spectacular scenery adds to the unique experience. The open plains are the hunting grounds of a healthy population of lions. Elephant and hippo find solace in the swampy grounds and lakes, while elegant Masai giraffe browse in the woodlands.

And with diverse habitats comes variety. Guests enjoy thrilling game viewing by boat on elevated seating for unimpeded sightings. Game drives offer guests the opportunity to help our conservation efforts, by tracking and identifying the lions and leopards of the area through the use of identikits.  At night, listen to the songs and stories of the land during a traditional Kugisha supper around a roaring fire with friends old and new.

Purpose: We made history at Magashi when we partnered with the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Since its opening in 2019, two of our guides became the first-ever Rwandans to receive a coveted FGASA qualification. Today, Akagera’s rebirth is an extraordinary conservation success story.

Wildlife: Emporium-Safari Magashi is home once more to an abundance of apex predators and their prey, offering  dramatic game action. There are between 15 and 20 leopards, a healthy lion population, black and white rhinos, and elephants can be seen splashing in the lake from the deck.

Watch out for waterbuck, impala and warthog grazing on the peninsula’s western side, while on the eastern side eland are often seen by the shore, as well as hippo, crocodiles and elephant bulls. Secretive sitatunga provide thrilling sightings on the water’s edge.

Other sightings may include buffalo, Masai giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra, topi, roan, Defassa waterbuk and eland – and an impressive 520 species of bird including occasional sightings of the rare shoebill stork.

Emporium-Safari Magashi:

Perched on the edge of Lake Rwanyakazinga’s sparkling waters, Magashi is spectacular. A beautiful sanctuary to breathe out in, after a thrilling gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park or a stay in the bustling capital of Kigali. Intimate and luxurious, the eight spacious tented suites decorated in soft, earthy tones, welcome you into a quintessential East African safari wonderland.

The main areas consist of a chic lounge, dining area, bar and pool – every corner boasting glorious views, while the expansive viewing deck is the perfect stage for sundowners, wildlife spotting and storytelling at the convivial fire pit.

Magashi Camp is situated in the productive and phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Activities

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Game Drives

Akagera comprises some of the most picturesque savannah in East Africa – open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains – with Emporium-Safari Magashi being the only private concession area in the park. Home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, reintroduced eastern black rhino and lion, as well as the secretive sitatunga. Guests can participate in conservation efforts, including tracking and identifying the lions and leopards of the area through the use of identikits.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Night Drives

After dark game viewing with filtered spotlights allow you to find intriguing nocturnal animals. Typically seen may include spotted hyaena, civet, genet, mongoose, owls and nightjars. Or even the enigmatic leopard. With day and night game drives on offer, exploring at Emporium-Safari Magashi is truly extraordinary.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Boating

Boating in swamp cruisers, with 'double decker' seating for higher elevation game viewing, is an excellent way to view the water birds and many other aquatic animals seen around beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Possible year round.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Fishing

Fishing on a catch and release basis only, year round, with the camp providing a small stock of basic rods and reels.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Birding

After an early breakfast in camp, gear up for a thrilling bird watching experience. Akagera National Park is renowned as one of the best birding areas in the world with more than 500 species recorded here. A bird count comparable with the larger Kruger National Park. Rarities include the papyrus gonolek (restricted to the papyrus swamps), the localised red-faced barbet, and the swamp flycatcher.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Conservation & Community

Boasting a light footprint, Emporium-Safari Magashi is 100% solar powered, and completely single-use plastic free. Besides our commitment to conservation and sustainable operations, we are delighted to have set up a Children in the Emporium-Safari (CITW) Eco-Club at Akayange Primary School, near the North Gate of Akagera. Further community empowerment initiatives include hiring locally, with one-third of staff recruited from the surrounding communities, with ongoing training and development offered to ensure staff are able to grow into senior roles. In addition, the camp supports local community cooperatives that make lunch bags for guests, kitenge beeswax wraps, candles for the dining tables, and carved wooden shoebills.

Emporium-Safari Magashi – Emporium-Safari & Olympus, A Visionary Partnership

In 2018 Emporium-Safari joined forces with Olympus in an exciting partnership to enhance our wildlife photography experience in camps. The result of this partnership has produced incredible images taken by guests, guides and camp managers alike.

Olympus Photo Hubs, set up at selected camps, allow our guests the opportunity of capturing their images while our Emporium-Safari photographic guides assist with sharing tips on how best to capture those powerful Emporium-Safari moments.

Probably the best City hotel weve stayed at. Alal Gogo was particularly outstanding. He managed to arrange for us to attend the Woody Allan Band show with our guest (who is a musician) even when it had been booked out and was very courteous throughout. Thank you so muclh. A wonderful stay.
